Techniques for setting effective goals help you achieve whatever you want.

Many people falsely believe the goals they set are far out of reach.  Other people believe they just aren’t good at setting goals and sticking to them, so they don’t even bother trying. The real problem, more often than not, is that the goals are unclear or unrealistic.

No matter where you are in life you can use your current place as a starting point for great success. All you need to do is learn how to set clear, concise, and actionable goals that push you forward and build momentum.

There are some simple strategies and tools you can implement that will help you set your goals and accomplish more. So let’s begin!

Goal Setting Made Easy
You need to remember that you will be constantly setting new goals for yourself throughout your life. Many people become discouraged because they feel that every time they reach one goal, they still have even more work in front of them. Unless you want to reach a goal and stand still for the rest of your life, it is a good thing to always be setting and revising your goals!  Doing this means that you will continue to move forward, become a better person, and accomplish greater things.

When setting goals, you should take a moment to envision where you will be and what you will be doing in a month, six months, a year, five years, and ten years. A problem that many people have is that they set huge goals for five years from now.  Although it is great to have lofty goals, if they are too ambitious you may feel easily intimidated or discouraged. For this reason, you need to set small goals all along the way so you can continue to motivate yourself and build momentum.

Short-term goals are just as important as long-term goals, and this is one of the most important things that you should keep in mind when setting goals. Create goals for yourself every few months so that when you reach them, you will feel accomplished and excited to reach the next goal. These shorter-term goals are like stepping stones; they will keep you excited about the future and push you forward in moments of doubt or frustration.

Another thing I like to do is set process goals, rather than outcome goals. Instead of focusing on outcomes (often due to factors that are out of your control), focus on the process. An example would be walking a mile every day, or calling five extra customers every week, or saving an extra $5 a week for a holiday. All of these things, which contribute to longer-term outcomes, are also completely under your control. This allows you to make a commitment to yourself, and experience the power of keeping it. It also empowers you, because there is nothing stopping you from performing these goals except yourself.

You can also use the power of affirmations to help you create the positive mindset you need to get things done faster. Affirmations will help you keep a positive attitude while you work hard to reach your goals. Affirmations are short, concise, positive statements that you can repeat to yourself as often as needed to help you reprogram your mind, while focusing on the positive in your life.

As you develop your affirmations, you may want to think about where you want your goals to take you. Examples of goal-setting affirmations can be as simple as, “I am focused on my goals and dreams,” or, “I have well-structured goals and stick to my deadlines.” It seems rather simple – and it is – but this way of thinking will help you set and reach the important milestones in your life, while making you more resilient to any obstacles along way.

Do you feel as though you’re in a rut? Does nothing feel engaging or entertaining? When you want to make sure you’re still in the right direction and you don’t want to settle for a mundane life, you’ll discover that you need to start challenging yourself.

When you take on a challenge head first, you’re forcing yourself to grow. When your self-esteem needs a boost, challenging yourself can help you see yourself in a new light.

Overcoming challenges is mainly overcoming your own fear.

What Kind of Challenges Should I Pursue?
No matter what type of challenge you undertake, don’t assume you’re going to get started on it “sometime soon.” Think about what steps you need to take to get there today. Whether it involves making some phone calls or getting some certifications, make some time to get it done as soon as possible.

  • If you have the desire to start a new career, call a career counselor for guidance or the local university for class schedules.
  • If you challenge yourself to achieve better health, call a nutritionist or the local gym for rates and advice.
  • If you always wanted to learn how to play a musical instrument, call the music store to inquire about lessons or rental fees.

Don’t delay when something is this important, but remember that moving slowly is much better than not moving at all. When you want to make sure you’re achieving the results that you deserve, you’ll discover that choosing to move at all is a big step.

Practice Setting Goals and Holding Yourself Accountable
Another way you can start conquering small challenges is by setting some achievable goals. For instance, say you want to improve your writing skills. Then set yourself a goal to write at least a paragraph a day. It’s a simple, realistic goal that will help you improve your skills.

It’s very likely that you will become more productive when you have a limited amount of time to accomplish your simple challenge. So if you only have 15 minutes to concentrate on your challenge, then make the best use of it and simply focus your energy on making it the most productive 15 minutes of your day.

Measure Your Progress Regularly
In order to build your self-esteem, you regularly need to see how far you’ve come. Make sure you keep track of your progress on a regular basis.

  • Keep a diary that lists all you’ve accomplished in the day.
  • Keep a list of all books you read last month.
  • Keep a weight journal to track how many pounds you’ve lost.

Over time, you’ll find that this is a great way to keep yourself moving forward. Looking at past progress is a great way to replicate your success, so keep note of how far you’ve come.

Keeping a diary can help you achieve your goals faster.

The Power of Numbers
If you’re struggling to challenge yourself, remember that you can get someone else to work with you. Do you have any goals that you and your loved ones share? If so, take some time and see if you can encourage each other. This encouragement will help to build your self-esteem because you’ll see progress toward your goal.

We must always strive for constant self-improvement. In doing so, we’ll see just how capable and competent we really are!
